Frequently asked questions

What is a scale score?

A scale score converts the number of questions a student got right into a number that means the same thing from one version of the test to the next. States then set cut scores that divide the scale into performance levels, such as below, approaching, meeting, and exceeding the standard.

Can I compare scores between states?

No. Each state, or each group of states that share a test, uses its own scale and its own cut scores. A 1500 on the Texas STAAR and a 2500 on the California CAASPP are on unrelated scales.

Do the cut scores change?

Sometimes. New York publishes new ranges every year, New Jersey moved to a new scale in 2026, and Virginia is raising its cut scores over four years. Each page here says which test year its ranges apply to.
