ACT Score Calculator

Enter how many questions you got right and get your section scores, your Composite, the SAT equivalent, and your national rank. It uses the conversion tables from ACT's own 2026-27 practice test, so the numbers match the current test format.

Enter how many scored questions you got right in each section. Science is optional and doesn't change your Composite.

How ACT scoring works

Each section starts with a raw score: the number of scored questions you answered correctly. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a guess never costs you points. ACT then converts each raw score to a scale score from 1 to 36.

Your Composite is the average of your English, Math, and Reading scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Science is optional and reported separately.

The conversion is different on every test date. ACT adjusts it so that a 26 means the same thing no matter which version of the test you took. That is why this calculator can be off by a point or two per section against your official report.

What to do with your score

A Composite only means something next to the schools you want. Check it against the published ranges with the retake calculator, convert it with the ACT to SAT conversion chart, or see which colleges still require scores on the SAT and ACT policy tracker.

Frequently asked questions

How is the ACT Composite score calculated?

Add your English, Math, and Reading scale scores and divide by 3. If the result ends in a fraction, round to the nearest whole number, with one-half or more rounding up. A 30 in English, 28 in Math, and 31 in Reading averages 29.67, which rounds to a Composite of 30.

Does Science count toward the ACT Composite?

No. On the current ACT, Science is an optional section and the Composite is the average of English, Math, and Reading only. If you take Science, it is reported as its own score.

How many questions can I miss and still get a 30?

On ACT's 2026-27 practice test, a 30 takes 33 of 41 scored Math questions and 23 of 27 scored Reading questions. That form's English table skips 30: 35 correct is a 29 and 36 correct is a 31. The exact numbers shift a little from one test date to the next.

What is an ACT superscore?

A superscore takes your best English, Math, and Reading scores across every test date and averages those three, instead of using the scores from one sitting. Each college decides whether it accepts superscores, so check the policy at every school on your list.

Why do some questions not count toward my score?

Each section includes a few field-test questions that ACT is trying out for future tests. They are not marked and do not count. The scored totals are 40 English, 41 Math, 27 Reading, and 34 Science questions.
