i-Ready math scores by grade
The lowest score in each on-grade-level placement, with the national fall median for comparison.
Placement and percentile are two different things
The placement compares the score with the end-of-year standard for the grade. The percentile compares it with other students nationally at the same time of year. A student can be one grade level below in the fall and still be above the 50th percentile.
Schools that use MAP Growth report on a different scale. See the MAP score chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good i-Ready diagnostic score?
A score in the on-grade-level range for your child's grade. In math that starts at 449 in 3rd grade, 480 in 5th, 495 in 6th, 508 in 7th, and 518 in 8th. The cutoffs are the same in fall, winter, and spring, so a fall score is measured against the same bar as a spring score.
What do the i-Ready placement levels mean?
i-Ready sorts each score into five placements relative to the student's grade: Mid or Above Grade Level, Early On Grade Level, One Grade Level Below, Two Grade Levels Below, and Three or More Grade Levels Below. Kindergarten through 2nd grade have fewer levels because there are not that many grades below them.
What is the average i-Ready math score for 6th grade?
The national median for 6th grade math is 475 in fall, 484 in winter, and 493 in spring. The fall median is below the on-grade-level cutoff of 495, so the typical 6th grader starts the year placed below grade level.
Is i-Ready Diagnostic the same as i-Ready Inform?
Yes. Curriculum Associates renamed the i-Ready Diagnostic to i-Ready Inform starting with the 2026-2027 school year. Its placement tables say the score ranges have not changed since 2024-25.
Why is my child below grade level in the fall?
The placement ranges do not change during the year, so the first test is measured against the same bar as the last. In several grades the national fall median sits below the on-grade-level cutoff, which means a below-grade-level placement in the fall is common. The percentile tells you how the score compares with other students at the same point in the year.
