How to score an SAT practice test

Mark each answer against the key and count the correct ones in each module. Add the two Reading and Writing modules together, then the two Math modules. Those two totals are your raw scores.

College Board's table turns each raw score into a lower and an upper section score. Add the two lower values for the bottom of your total range and the two upper values for the top. The calculator does that and also shows the midpoint.

Frequently asked questions

How is the SAT scored?

The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math. Each is scored from 200 to 800 in 10-point steps, and your total is the two added together, from 400 to 1600. There is no penalty for wrong answers.

Why does this calculator show a range instead of one score?

Because College Board does. Its practice test scoring guides list a lower and an upper score for every raw score. The real digital SAT is adaptive: how you do on the first module decides whether your second module is harder or easier, and the same number of correct answers is worth more on the harder path. A paper practice test cannot know which path you would have been on.

I took a practice test in Bluebook. Do I need this?

No. Bluebook scores its practice tests for you and the result appears in My Practice. This calculator is for the paper practice tests College Board publishes as PDFs, which have 66 Reading and Writing questions and 54 Math questions and have to be scored by hand.

What is an SAT superscore?

A superscore adds your highest Reading and Writing score to your highest Math score, even if they came from different test dates. Each college decides whether it superscores, so check the policy at every school on your list.

How many questions can I miss and still score 1500?

On Practice Test 10, 64 of 66 correct in Reading and Writing and 51 of 54 in Math each put the bottom of your range at 750 or higher. The cutoffs move from test to test.
