How to read the report
The percentile tells you how the score compares with students in the same grade who tested at the same point in the year. The 60th percentile means the score is as high as or higher than 60 percent of them.
Look at growth as well as the level. A student who moves from the 35th percentile in fall to the 45th in spring grew faster than a typical student, even though both scores are below the median.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good MAP score?
It depends on the grade and the time of year. The median fall math score is 184 in 3rd grade, 210 in 6th grade, and 222 in 8th grade. A score at the median is the 50th percentile, and the 75th percentile in fall 6th grade math is 221.
What is a RIT score?
RIT is the scale MAP Growth reports on. It measures what a student is ready to learn, on one continuous scale from kindergarten through high school, so a score can be compared from one year to the next.
What is the average MAP reading score by grade?
In the fall, the median reading score is 185 in 3rd grade, 204 in 5th, 209 in 6th, 212 in 7th, and 216 in 8th, on NWEA's 2025 norms.
Did MAP norms change in 2025?
Yes. NWEA published new norms in 2025 based on tests taken from fall 2022 through spring 2024, replacing the 2020 norms. A given RIT score can land on a different percentile than it did under the old norms, so use a chart that says which norms it is built on.
How often do students take MAP?
Most schools give it up to three times a year, in fall, winter, and spring. The norms assume testing around weeks 4, 20, and 32 of instruction, so a test taken much earlier or later in a term is not directly comparable.
