The CDS also breaks the applicant pool out by gender: 221 admits out of 2,259 men who applied, 140 admits out of 1,801 women, and 14 admits out of 120 applicants who reported another gender.
One detail worth flagging for anyone comparing this figure to other schools: Columbia's transfer pool includes the 3-2 Combined Plan, an engineering pathway for students who spend their first three years at a partner liberal-arts college before finishing a fourth and fifth year at Columbia Engineering. A distinction that changes the story: Columbia College versus the School of General Studies
This is the part of the Columbia transfer conversation that gets flattened almost every time it is written up.
Columbia operates two separate undergraduate, degree-granting colleges, each with its own admissions committee and its own Common Data Set filing. The 8.97% figure above describes Columbia College and Columbia Engineering, the schools most people picture when they hear "Columbia undergrad." It does not describe the School of General Studies (GS).
GS is Columbia's college for what it describes as "returning and nontraditional students seeking a rigorous, traditional, Ivy League undergraduate degree full or part time." Its student body skews older (a median age in the mid-twenties is typical), and it includes veterans, parents, and career-changers alongside students transferring from other colleges. GS runs its own admissions process, and its Fall 2024 CDS Section D2 reports a transfer acceptance rate of 52.41%, from 1,330 applicants and 697 admits, with 410 students enrolling.
That is not a typo, and it is not the same applicant pool. GS's own first-year admission rate (153 admits out of 516 applicants, or 29.65%) is also far higher than Columbia College and Engineering's. GS is a different school with a different mission and a different admissions bar, not a side door into the Columbia College experience. Reporting "Columbia's transfer rate" as a single number without naming which college it refers to misstates the picture. A family weighing GS specifically should research it on its own terms, separate from the Columbia College and Engineering numbers this article focuses on.
Why transfer admission works differently
None of Columbia's own materials explain exactly why the transfer rate lands where it does, but the structural reasons are visible in any selective university's operating model. Every fall and spring, some fraction of the enrolled class leaves through study abroad, withdrawal, or transfer elsewhere.
