How the estimate works
Each part of the exam is scaled to its share of the score: multiple choice is 40%, and free response is 60%. That gives a weighted total out of 100.
We estimate a 5 at about 76, a 4 at 61.8, a 3 at 49.5, and a 2 at 34.3. College Board has not openly posted a scoring chart for this exam, so the cut points here are the middle of the curves other calculators use.
The sources disagree by up to 4 points on a single cut, so when your total is within 3 points of one, the calculator shows a range such as “3 to 4” and does not pick.
Starting with the May 2027 exam, all 3 short-answer questions are required and include source material and there is a single required long essay question (no choice among prompts); College Board says the multiple-choice section and the scoring rubrics are unchanged. The exam is fully digital in Bluebook. The DBQ focuses on topics from 1754 to 1980.

Frequently asked questions
What score do I need for a 5 on APUSH?
We estimate about 76% of the weighted total, and about 49.5% for a 3. College Board sets the real cut after each exam and does not publish it, and the sources we compared differ by up to 4 points.
How accurate is this APUSH score calculator?
It is an estimate. College Board has not openly posted a scoring chart for this exam, so the cut points here are the middle of the curves other calculators use. Treat a result near a cut point as either score.
Is the APUSH exam curved?
Not against other students. College Board sets the composite score needed for each AP score for that year’s exam form, so the cut points shift a little from year to year.
