NYU Admits 9.06% of First-Year Applicants and 38.65% of Transfers. West Virginia Runs the Other Way.

Across 27 schools where both rates come from the same filing, transferring is easier at 22. At the six that admit half or more of first-year applicants, it is easier at only two.

"Apply somewhere else and transfer in later" is what a student hears after a spring that didn't go the way they planned. It is offered as a general fact about how admissions works, and it comes with no school attached.

Across the 27 schools in our Real Acceptance Rates corpus where a transfer rate and a first-year rate can both be read from the same Common Data Set filing, transferring is the easier route at 22 of them. But whether it is depends almost entirely on how selective the school is for first-year applicants, and at the accessible end of that range it reverses. NYU admitted 9.06% of first-year applicants and 38.65% of transfer applicants. West Virginia admitted 77.27% of first-year applicants and 55.85% of transfer applicants.

Same advice, opposite arithmetic, and both schools publish their own answer.

This is a count from 27 named schools, chosen because both figures appear in one filing and could be checked against it. It is not a survey of American higher education, and nothing below should be extended past the schools listed.

These Are Two Populations, Not Two Slices of One Pool

Before any of the numbers: every comparison in this article sets Section D2 of the Common Data Set — degree-seeking transfer applicants — against Section C1, first-time, first-year applicants. Those are two separately reported populations in the same document. Several of the research records behind this corpus state that explicitly.

What follows from that is the thing most likely to be gotten wrong. Transfer applicants are not a subset of a school's applicant pool, and the two counts cannot be added. NYU's 9.06% and 38.65% do not average, combine, or blend into a single rate for the school. They are two different questions the same filing answers about two different groups of people who applied in two different ways. A gap between them is a comparison of two doors, not a division of one.

Every figure below is read that way, and the two sections stay separate throughout.

A positive gap means the school's transfer rate is higher than its first-year rate. At the schools that admit few first-year applicants, transferring is markedly easier — a median of 13.36 points easier across the 14 of them. In the middle band, all seven schools point the same direction, a median of 12.00 points.

At the six schools in this set that already admit half or more of their first-year applicants, it goes the other way: transfer is easier at only two of those six, and the median gap is 11.65 points in the harder direction. Six schools is a small group, and that number should not be carried around without it. It describes West Virginia, UIC, Buffalo, Kansas, North Texas, and New Hampshire, and nothing else.

The two schools in that bin where transfer is nominally easier are easier by 0.02 points (North Texas, 70.89% against 70.91%) and 0.49 points (New Hampshire, 89.14% against 89.63%) — differences too small to describe as a gap in either direction.

Cornell is the school that shows how little a direction is worth on its own: 8.41% first-year against 9.28% transfer is a gap of 0.87 points, technically in the easier direction and functionally the same door. UT Austin, at 22.22% against 21.96%, is the only school under a 25% first-year rate where the transfer figure comes in lower, and it does so by a quarter of a point.

What the Correlation Does and Doesn't Say

Across all 27 schools, the correlation between a school's first-year admit rate and its transfer advantage is -0.701. The more selective a school is for first-year applicants, the wider its transfer gap tends to be.

The usual objection to a number like that is that a handful of extreme schools are producing it. Here they are not. Removing the most selective schools moves the correlation to -0.750; removing the least selective moves it to -0.700; removing both moves it to -0.812. Rank correlation, which ignores the size of the gaps and looks only at the ordering, is -0.549. The relationship holds through the middle of the distribution, which is where most families' lists actually sit. This series has tested relationships that fell apart once their tails were removed — a yield relationship we looked at and dropped — and this one does not behave that way.

That is a statement about how these 27 filings line up, and it stops there. Selectivity is not shown here to cause anything. The correlation describes an association across a set of schools that were not randomly sampled, and no part of it establishes that one number produces the other.

Nobody in This Set Says Why

No school among these 27 publishes a reason for its gap, in either direction.

There are plausible mechanisms, and it is worth naming them precisely because they are the sort of thing that gets asserted confidently: seats freed up when first- and second-year students leave, articulation agreements that route community college students into public universities on defined terms, and transfer review that weighs college coursework rather than high school records. Any of those could be at work at any of these schools. This data cannot settle which, and none of them is sourced here. A gap between two sections of a form is a measurement, not an explanation.

The same restraint applies to the reversal at the accessible end. West Virginia's 77.27% against 55.85%, or UIC's 75.76% against 55.18%, is what those filings report. Why the transfer door is narrower at those schools is not something the filings answer.

The Check You Can Run Yourself

This takes a few minutes per school and needs nothing but the school's own PDF.

  1. Find the school's Common Data Set, usually posted by its institutional research office.
  2. Open Section C1 and read the number of first-time, first-year applicants and the number admitted. Divide admits by applicants.
  3. Open Section D2 and read the number of degree-seeking transfer applicants and the number admitted. Divide admits by applicants.
  4. Compare the two rates. Do not add the counts, and do not treat one group as part of the other — C1 and D2 count different people.
  5. Note the entering class each section covers, and check that both figures describe the same year. Where a school publishes several years, match the transfer cohort to the first-year cohort rather than taking the most recent of each.

That comparison is the school's own answer to whether transferring is a wider or a narrower door there. Run it for three schools on your list and you will get three different answers, which is the part no general advice about transferring can give you.
