How the estimate works

Each part of the exam is scaled to its share of the score: multiple choice is 50%, and free response is 50%. That gives a weighted total out of 100.

We estimate a 5 at about 64, a 4 at 50.5, a 3 at 38.5, and a 2 at 30.5. The last scoring chart College Board posted openly for this exam is from 2012, the most recent one available. We combine it with the curves 3 other calculators use.

The sources disagree by up to 8 points on a single cut, so when your total is within 4 points of one, the calculator shows a range such as “3 to 4” and does not pick.

College Board revised the exam for May 2027: fully digital, multiple-choice questions increase from 40 to 42 with 4 answer choices instead of 5, and free-response questions decrease from 6 to 4 with each worth 10 points instead of 4 (the investigative task is gone).

Frequently asked questions

What score do I need for a 5 on AP Stats?

We estimate about 64% of the weighted total, and about 38.5% for a 3. College Board sets the real cut after each exam and does not publish it, and the sources we compared differ by up to 8 points.

How accurate is this AP Stats score calculator?

It is an estimate. The last scoring chart College Board posted openly for this exam is from 2012, the most recent one available. We combine it with the curves 3 other calculators use. Treat a result near a cut point as either score.

Is the AP Stats exam curved?

Not against other students. College Board sets the composite score needed for each AP score for that year’s exam form, so the cut points shift a little from year to year.
