Which Colleges Give the Biggest ED Advantage

We ranked 14 schools by ED admit-rate advantage, from Northeastern's 11.2x edge to Rice's 1.5x, using each school's own Common Data Set.

At Northeastern, applicants who applied through the binding Early Decision round were admitted at 43.05%. Applicants who applied through every other round were admitted at 3.83%. Same school, same admissions cycle, same Common Data Set filing, an 11.2x gap between the two pools. That's the widest early-round advantage in our research, but it isn't unusual in kind, only in size. We decomposed the Common Data Set filings for 14 schools ourselves, isolating each one's Early Decision admit rate from its non-ED admit rate, and every school on the list shows a gap. What varies enormously is how large that gap is. At Rice, the ED rate is 11.26% against a non-ED rate of 7.41%, a 1.5x difference that barely changes the calculus of applying early. At Northeastern it's more than eleven times. Almost nobody publishes these two numbers side by side for one school, let alone for 14 at once. Below is the full ranking, followed by what the size of the gap actually tells you and, just as important, what it doesn't.

Two things worth noticing before anything else. First, the multiple isn't correlated with the ED rate on its own. Boston College has one of the higher ED admit rates on the list, 33.45%, but a middling multiple of 2.4x, because its non-ED rate is also comparatively high at 13.77%. Second, a small multiple doesn't mean ED is pointless there. Rice's 1.5x is the smallest gap in the data, but 11.26% is still meaningfully higher than 7.41%. The multiple tells you how lopsided the two pools are relative to each other, not how much the round itself is worth in isolation.

How to Read This Number

This is the part that matters most, so it comes before any interpretation of the ranking: the multiple is not the boost an identical student would get by switching from Regular Decision to Early Decision. It looks like that. It is tempting to read "11.2x" as "you are eleven times more likely to get in if you apply ED," and that reading is wrong.

The ED applicant pool and the non-ED applicant pool are not the same group of people applying at two different times. They are different populations. Early Decision pools are smaller and skew toward recruited athletes admitted through binding agreements, legacy applicants who have decided early that a school is their first choice, and students whose applications are simply more finished by November than by January, stronger test scores locked in, essays polished, a clearer sense of fit. Regular Decision and Early Action pools are larger, later-stage, and include students who are still building their case, still waiting on senior-year grades or a retest, or deliberately keeping options open. When a school admits 43.05% of one pool and 3.83% of the other, part of that gap is the binding commitment doing what binding commitments do to an admissions office's math. Part of it is that the two groups of applicants are not, on average, equally far along in their applications or equally certain of their fit. There is no way to cleanly separate those two effects from a Common Data Set filing, and any article that tells you it can is overselling what a decomposition can show.

Two caveats follow directly from that. A reader who takes an 11.2x figure literally and assumes an identical application would clear an 11x-easier bar by simply checking the ED box is making a decision on a number that doesn't mean what it appears to mean. And Early Decision is binding: if you're admitted, you're committing to enroll and to withdraw every other application before you've seen a single financial aid offer from anywhere else. That forecloses comparing packages across schools entirely. A rate advantage, real as it is, is not a reason to give up the ability to compare aid.

What Actually Drives the Spread

Reasoning only from what's in the table above, plus how binding admissions plans generally work: the widest gaps tend to sit at schools where the ED pool is large relative to the school's applicant base and admits a substantial share of the class through that single round. Northeastern's 3,466 ED applicants and 1,492 ED admits, next to a non-ED pool nearly 30 times larger, is the extreme case in our data. Tufts and Boston University both show high absolute ED rates, 32.02% and 31.35%, alongside comparatively high non-ED rates too, 9.28% and 11%, which pulls their multiples down toward the middle of the pack even though their ED admit rates rank near the top.

The narrowest gaps show up where the ED and non-ED pools land closer together on both ends. Rice's ED rate of 11.26% and non-ED rate of 7.41% aren't far apart to begin with, which is the honest counterexample to any assumption that a binding round automatically produces a wide gap. Johns Hopkins, at 2.1x, shows the same pattern at smaller absolute numbers: 10.93% versus 5.25%.

We don't have each school's target share of the class filled through ED, and we're not going to estimate it. The Common Data Set doesn't report that figure directly, and guessing at it would be exactly the kind of invented statistic this piece is built to avoid. What the data does support is this: the size of the gap tracks how differently a school's ED and non-ED pools are sized and treated relative to each other, not some fixed property of "how much ED helps" that applies the same way at every school.

So Should You Apply ED?

The ranking above is a reason to ask the question more precisely, not a reason to answer it the same way for every school. A few honest filters, in order:

Is the school genuinely your first choice, not just a strong option you'd be happy with? ED is a binding commitment, and it should reflect a decision you've already made, not one you're hoping the admit-rate math will help you make.

Can your family commit without seeing financial aid offers from anywhere else? Because ED forecloses comparison entirely, applying ED to a school whose aid package might not work for your family is a real risk, independent of how favorable the admit-rate gap looks on paper.

Will your application be materially stronger in three more months? If your GPA trend, a fall retest, a new leadership role, or a project you're still finishing would meaningfully change what an admissions committee sees, locking in early trades that improvement away. A student whose junior-year grades or senior-fall test scores would transform their application is usually better served by Regular Decision, even at a school with a wide ED gap like Northeastern's.

None of the multiples in the table above are a promise about your individual odds. They describe the historical relationship between two differently composed applicant pools at a specific school in a specific cycle.
