Rachel began by looking into Hari’s English Honors Class syllabus to assess topics covered by Hari’s teacher. She noticed that they relied heavily on certain skill sets that were not taught, but students were expected to have them.

Oftentimes, students do not learn fundamental concepts of English beyond Elementary School, especially grammatical sentence construction. This is precisely why university entrance exams, namely the SAT & ACT, require students to prove they can remember them. Unfortunately, Middle School teaches reading, and High School teaches contextual analysis. Neither confirm students’ comprehension of grammar with dedicated classroom lessons. Rather, they’re simply marked-down on assignments and told to improve. How?

Rachel performed a close inspection of Hari’s previous homework, quizzes, and assessments to understand his individual areas for improvement and created a targeted learning plan. Then, she went back to the basics, focusing on punctuation and verb conjugation before moving onto more advanced elements dangling prepositions and misplaced modifiers.

Once mastered, Hari was ready for more compositional skill sets, including how to coherently craft Introductions, Body Paragraphs, and Conclusions. He learned the importance of clear Thesis Statements and Topic Sentences in PEEL formats - greatly improving his overall ability to articulate his arguments!
