Junior year carries more weight in admissions than any other year. Your grades are fully visible, your test scores are determined, your activities reach their peak, and you’re forming the impressions that go into teacher recommendations. This month-by-month plan makes sure you leave nothing on the table.
September – October: Build the foundation
- Set up a weekly study schedule before the first test, not after. Junior-year courseload is heavier — don’t wing it.
- Talk to your teachers in the first month. Get to know the ones who might write your recommendations. They write better letters for students they know.
- Register for your first SAT or ACT sitting (December or February if you haven’t tested yet; March or May if you want a second attempt).
- Start a running document of activity highlights: awards, leadership moments, projects you’re proud of. You’ll need this for the Common App activities section, and you’ll forget the details by senior year.
November – December: Standardized testing push
- Take your first real practice test if you haven’t. Score it honestly and identify your target improvement areas.
- Begin a structured SAT/ACT prep cycle — 6–8 weeks of focused prep before your test date.
- Use winter break for full-length timed practice tests. It’s the best uninterrupted time you’ll have.
