Financial aid is one of the most confusing parts of the college process — and one of the highest-stakes. Here’s what every family needs to understand before submitting a single application.

Many families assume the sticker price of a college is what they’ll pay. It almost never is. Understanding how financial aid actually works — and what choices maximize your package — can be worth tens of thousands of dollars over four years. This guide breaks down what you need to know before you apply.

The difference between need-based and merit aid

Need-based aid is determined by your family’s financial situation as calculated by the FAFSA and CSS Profile. It comes in the form of grants (free money), loans (money you repay), and work-study (money you earn). Merit aid is awarded based on academic achievement, talent, or other criteria — regardless of financial need. Many strong schools outside the top 20 offer substantial merit scholarships to attract top students. Both types can coexist in a single aid package.

FAFSA vs. CSS Profile — know which applies

The FAFSA is required by all schools that accept federal aid. It opens October 1 of your senior year and should be filed as early as possible — many state aid programs are first-come, first-served. The CSS Profile is required by about 400 mostly private colleges (including most highly selective schools) and collects more detailed financial information. Check which forms each school on your list requires before October of senior year.
