The College Interview Guide

Most students either massively over-prepare or massively under-prepare for college interviews. Here’s how to walk in ready to have an actual conversation — and leave a lasting impression.

College interviews are rarely decisive — a great interview won’t overcome a weak application, and a mediocre interview rarely sinks a strong one. But at the margins, especially for selective schools where many applicants are academically equivalent, a memorable interview can tip the balance. More importantly, it’s often your only chance to present yourself as a person rather than a file.

Alumni vs. admissions officer interviews

Most selective school interviews are conducted by alumni volunteers, not admissions officers. Alumni interviews are typically conversational and low-pressure; the interviewer is often just looking for evidence that you’re a real, thoughtful person. Know which type you’re doing and calibrate your preparation accordingly.

What interviewers are actually looking for

Not rehearsed answers. Not a perfect résumé recitation. Interviewers are trying to answer two questions:

  • Is this a person I’d enjoy talking to for an hour? (intellectual curiosity, genuine engagement)
  • Would this person contribute something interesting to our campus community?

The students who give the best interviews are the ones who treat it as a genuine conversation, not a performance. They ask real questions. They change direction when something interesting comes up. They’re clearly themselves.
